Lakefront properties are beautiful - but they come with real challenges. Sloped terrain, erosion pressure from water, and uneven elevation can make even the nicest shoreline feel unusable. That's exactly what we were working with on this Greenfield, NH job.
What you end up with when you do this right is a property that actually functions from top to bottom. We built a substantial tiered stone retaining wall that steps down from the home toward the water's edge. Large cut stone blocks were used throughout, giving the wall the mass it needs to hold back the grade while keeping everything looking clean and intentional. Integrated stone steps run straight through the center of the wall, connecting the upper yard to the lower level near the dock.
The difference between a wall that just holds dirt and one that adds real value to a property comes down to planning. When you're working near water, you have to think about drainage, load, and long-term stability - not just aesthetics. A well-built retaining wall near a shoreline needs to handle freeze-thaw cycles, moisture, and the natural movement of soil over time. We account for all of that.
This homeowner now has a flat, usable space right at the water's edge - a proper spot to set out chairs, store watercraft, and enjoy the lake without fighting the slope every time they walk down to the dock. The wall does the heavy lifting, literally, so the rest of the yard can just be enjoyed.
If your lakefront or sloped property feels more like a liability than an asset, a properly built retaining wall can change that completely. Greenfield and the surrounding area have no shortage of properties with serious elevation challenges - and that's exactly the kind of work we do best.
